India's Import Restrictions on Computers
04 Aug, 2023The Indian government has introduced a new policy to implement import restrictions on specific laptops and computers in order to promote local manufacturing. The Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) announced these restrictive measures on Thursday, which apply to products falling under HSN 8471 category.According to the notification, the import restrictions cover laptops, tablets, all-in-one personal computers, ultra-small form factor computers, and servers. These electronic products can only be imported with a valid license meant for restricted imports.The new policy is expected to drive local manufacturing in line with India's "Make in India" initiative. However, some experts have pointed out that India's current manufacturing ecosystem might not be fully prepared to handle such large-scale production demands.
